Amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, UNFPA continues to play a critical role during emergencies. In mid-2021, the worst floods in 40 years hit Timor-Leste. United Nations in collaboration with the Government of Timor-Leste coordinated an emergency response and accessment of needs for victims of the flash floods – mostly women and children. UNFPA ensures that the needs and rights of the most vulnerable -- especially women, pregnant mothers and adolescent girls in emergency situations are upheld and respected. UNFPA facilitates the distribution of  hygiene and sanitary items like sanitary napkins in one set known as ‘Dignity Kits’ and maternity packs in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

UNFPA also collaborates with authorities to ensure delivery of essential services to pregnant women -- providing mobile maternity clinics and basic materials like maternity packs to expectant mothers in emergencies.

UNFPA in collaboration with the Government of Timor-Leste to strengthen capacity of healthcare workers to sustain and leverage the progress and gains made in human development and institution building over the years. Notably, insufficient capacity is still a major challenge in the short/medium term.
