Since 2003, UNFPA Timor-Leste has supported governmental and nongovernmental organizations activities on addressing population issues. During the past 10 years UNFPA has been the leading agency to highlight the importance of data for development and the role of statistics in policy making.

UNFPA's population and development programme aims to develop government's capacity to address Timor-Leste's need for up-to-date and reliable population and socio-economic data. UNFPA has been supporting theGeneral Directorate of Statistics in strengthening national capacity to collect, analyze, publish and disseminate census data and other population surveys.

UNFPA's work in 2013 in support of the GDS:

To commemorate the International Year of Statistics 2013, the Directorate General of Statistics (DGS), Ministry of Finance and UNFPA in Timor-Leste organized a series of events to highlight the importance of statistics in planning the country's future development.

  • UNFPA staff accompanied a delegation from Timor-Leste General Directorate of Statistics (GDS) to Indonesia in July 2013 to meet with the Badan Pusat Statistics of Indonesia (BPS) and share knowledge and lessons learnt from their respective 2010 Population and Housing Censuses. BPS provided technical support to Timor-Leste for the 2010 Timor-Leste Population and Housing Censuses and for the upcoming Population and Housing Censuses in 2015, Timor-Leste will once again receive support from Indonesia in the areas of methodology and design, field operations, and data processing.
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • A delegation from Timor-Leste attended the Sixth Asian and Pacific Population Conference (APPC). The conference was held by UNESCAP in cooperation with UNFPA in September 2013 in Bangkok, to serve as an intergovernmental platform for the Asia-Pacific preparations for the special session of the General Assembly on the International Conference on Population and Development beyond 2014. The conference set the regional population and development agenda for the region over the next decade.
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • Over 600 students, researchers and staff of various ministries attended a three-day Statistics Fair in October in Dili that included an exhibition of the statistical reports and publications related to the successful conduction of census in 2010.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • On October 28-29 the Ministry of Finance hosted a regional seminar on Statistics including speakers from Australia and Indonesia and attended by policy-makers, UN representatives, NGOs, university students and civil society. During this seminar the importance of statistics as the lifeblood of governance was highlighted by the speakers. The Minister of Justice, Snr. Dionisio Babo Soares, UNFPA representative, Mr. John M. Pile and Sr. Antonino Freitas, General Director of Statistics launched 12 monographs and analytical reports related to the 2010 Census (click here to download).
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
  • A GIS and Mapping seminar and exhibition, supported by UNFPA and 16 other organizations was held in Dili in order to raise public awareness about maps and statistical data, and to provide them with an understanding of the role of statistics in the development work. More than 200 university students and development workers from several organizations attended the seminar and an estimated one thousand visited the exhibition.
 

UNFPA, Population and Development in 2014:

In 2014, UNFPA will continue its support to the General Directorate of Statistics, with special focus on the coming housing and population census to be held on 2015. A pilot census in 8 out of 13 districts is scheduled for 11 to 25th of July 2014.
