The General Directorate of Statistics (GDS), Ministry of Finance and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) signed a 5-year Multi-year Work Plan, to support the capacity building of directorate staff and implementation, analysis and dissemination of the 2015 Population and Housing Census.

The 5 year agreement, for the period of January 1, 2015 to December 31st, 2019, and an estimated $1.29 million budget is anticipated to strengthen Timor-Leste's national capacity for using data and evidence to develop, monitor and evaluate national policies and programmes in the areas of population dynamics, sexual and reproductive health, youth and gender equality.

To achieve this, UNFPA will work with GDS through the support to the planning, implementation, data capture, analysis, publication and dissemination of the 2015 Population and Housing Census as well as to support strengthening institutional and technical capacity of the staff of GDS by taking part in short term trainings, conferences and workshops.

The agreement documents were signed by Mr. Antonio Freitas, Director General of Statistics and Mr. John M. Pile, Representative of UNFPA Timor-Leste at UNFPA Meeting Hall, UN House in Dili.

UNFPA has supported the Government of Timor-Leste to conduct both population and Housing Census of 2004 and 2010 in addition to the upcoming 2015 census.
